Great story. A little hard to understand at first since it takes place in the UK in the 1800’s, but once you get used to the language it is easy to follow and quite entertaining.

Then you'll love this. I did hesitate because it was listed as YA, but I really shouldn't have. It is fantastic, as usual. Ms. Carriger has such vivid descriptions, which make the action and the details of this novel (and all her others) a very enjoyable read. While this is YA, it's not so much that a hardcore non-YA reader (like me) can't seriously get into it. Simply because the story revolves around teenaged girls, doesn't mean there isn't a lot of action. Would definitely recommend this.

A lovely, young romp. As a mature woman, I found the material to be, understandably, below my maturity level. Ergo, there were no challenges in this story for me.
That said, it was purely enjoyable, Gail Carriger perfection. As always, the paranormal was made normal, the absurd, humorously proper, and the characters enjoyable and unique. I love this woman's imagination! Thoroughly enjoyed it :)

I have yet to read Gail Carriger's The Parasol Protectorate series but I was very curious to see what her spin-off series for teens would be like. Etiquette & Espionage ended up being an intriguing read by the end, although I wasn't too sure about it for the first half.

Reason to Read:

1. An endearing adventure:

By the end of the book, I was quite taken in with this fun little story. The characters and world charmed me, with their quirks and fascinating little details. I liked Sophronia's spunky, tomboy personality and how she finds a way to apply herself to her learning... in her own unique way. I love that the characters in this story are a little bit different and very normal - perfect for readers to relate to.

While the book ended up being a lot of fun for me, it took me a while to come around and appreciate it. I don't think this spin-off series is the best place to start for those who haven't read The Parasol Protectorate series. I felt very lost and confused at first, because the world was so unfamiliar as was the language used. I needed more explanation and it just wasn't there, so the world felt disappointingly underdeveloped to me.

But at the same time, for much of the book Etiquette & Espionage felt more like a middle grade read as opposed to a young adult book. Sophronia is 14 in the book, and while I think this would be a great book for many middle grade readers I'm not sure it has much crossover appeal for those who liked Gail's adult series. The book felt very young at first, although by the end it seemed to venture closer to standard YA territory.

That being said, I enjoyed Etiquette & Espionage even if it wasn't quite what I was expecting. By the end I felt like I had found my rhythm with this book so that I had a better sense of the world structure.

As all her books have been ! Simply Devine.

Sophronia's knack for mechanics and a tendency toward mischief are hardly desirable qualities for a Victorian lady, but they do make her an ideal recruit for Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

When the 14-year-old girl arrives, she quickly discovers her school is unlike any other. Classes taught by werewolves and vampires are merely the beginning. Along with music and dance, Sophronia is schooled in the arts of espionage and intrigue - hardly subjects her mother would approve of, but ones she takes to with passion!
However, Sophronia quickly discovers school isn't all fun and games and soon finds herself immersed in a mystery whilst pursued by flywaymen and shady characters intent on attacking the Academy. Armed with her mechanimal, Bumbersnoot, and a group of steadfast friends, Sophronia sets out to uncover the truth and, hopefully, put a little polish on her finish before returning home for the holidays!

Etiquette & Espionage is a delightful story, and Gail Carriger does a terrific job with her young adult debut. Filled with humor and witty dialogue, the story easily entertains and keeps the reader turning the page. Carriger's penchant for creative character names is in full force with offerings such as Temminick, Mrs. Barnaclegoose and Dimity Ann Plumleigh-Teignmott, and she delightfully weaves in a few familiar faces (albeit younger!) from her wildly popular Parasol Protectorate series.

If you're a fan of Carriger's earlier books, you won't want to miss the newest addition to her colorful universe. And if, somehow, you've never heard of steampunk's comedic genius, this book is a great introduction to a world turned topsy-turvy by treacle tarts, flamboyant vampires, empowered women and flying dirigibles!

Fantastic characters you can't help but love (except the ones you're not supposed to). Amusing escapades, ridiculous siliness, and everything you could want for an enjoyable read. Acceptance and friendship abound. Something the world needs more of.

When the unladylike hoyden Sophronia is suddenly sent away to finishing school, she expects to be bored and frustrated. But this one is rather out of the ordinary.

A fabulous cast of strange characters and even stranger circumstances sees her making friends, having more fun than she expected, and creating mayhem with intent. A rollicking hood yarn with full steampunk setting and a lot of good, sooty, fun.
