In 1990, Patricia Cornwell sold her first novel, Postmortem, while working at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, Virginia. An auspicious debut, it went on to win the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity Awards as well as the French Prix du Roman d’Aventure prize—the first book ever to claim all these distinctions in a single year. Growing into an international phenomenon, the Scarpetta series won Cornwell the Sherlock Award for best detective created by an American author, the Gold Dagger Award, the RBA Thriller Award, and the Medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters for her contributions to literary and artistic development.

Today, Cornwell’s novels and iconic characters are known around the world. Beyond the Scarpetta series, Cornwell has written the definitive nonfiction account of Jack the Ripper’s identity, cookbooks, a children’s book, a biography of Ruth Graham, and two other fictional series based on the characters Win Garano and Andy Brazil. While writing Quantum, Cornwell spent two years researching space, technology, and robotics at Captain Calli Chase’s home base, NASA’s Langley Research Center, and studied cutting-edge law enforcement and security techniques with the Secret Service, the US Air Force, NASA Protective Services, Scotland Yard, and Interpol.

Cornwell was born in Miami. She grew up in Montreat, North Carolina, and now lives and works in Boston and Los Angeles.

Great book delving into the mysterious and often messy job of a coroner. Well written and you have to read to the end of the story to figure it all out.

I really enjoyed most of the book but the ending was drawn out. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a PC fan, but this wasn't her best. She doesn't seem to have any idea what to do with Marino. The "twins" bit is overworked. Lucy is a lot like Elsbeth Salander ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") with her "Take no Prisoners" mentality. Strong character, but she'd be tough to get close to. It was a bold move to kill off someone who'd once been a major character. This takes guts and shows confidence. OK. I guess criminals are stupid, but the prison deaths were so bloody obvious that anyone with a brain could have seen it and the perpetrator was just begging to be caught.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nineteenth Book in The Scarpetta Series and one of my favorites in the Entire Series

One of my favorite books in the entire Scarpetta Series. The previous book, Port Mortuary ended with Dawn Kincaid attacking Kay Scarpetta in her garage with a WASP knife. However, because Scarpetta had body armor she was asked to evaluate draped over her shoulder Kincaid ended up cutting her own hand and severing a finger and spraying Scarpetta with a fine mist of her blood from the WASP knife. This book starts with Scarpetta going to the Georgia Prison for Women to visit Kathleen Lawler, the woman who seduced her former colleague Jack Fielding when he was just a boy and she was his 30 + year old therapist at a camp for troubled kids and conceived Dawn Kincaid, who committed what the press is calling The Mensa Murders. While visiting with Kathleen Lawler she passes Scarpetta a kite with Jaime Berger's phone number and instructions to call from a pay phone. She does, and then meets with Berger and Marino and is asked by Berger to be her forensic expert in a case that she is working on, the case which happened in Savannah over 10 years ago was the murder of a man, his wife and their 5 year old twins. 18 year old woman with problems, Lola Daggette was arrested after she was caught in the shower at her halfway house trying to wash bloody clothing and she was then convicted and sentenced to death. But recent additional testing has discovered DNA matching Dawn Kincaid found at the scene of the murders that Lola Daggette was convicted of and Jaime Berger wants to use that to overturn her conviction and get Dawn Kincaid arrested for the murders. When Scarpetta consults the local medical examiner, A friend and colleague, she finds out that there is a pattern of odd deaths and supposed suicides that have been happening at The Georgia Prison for Women and then they are called to there when Kathleen Lawler drops dead. Then Scarpetta gets suspicious and checks on Jaime Berger, who is also dead. Then rethinking everything she remembers a few obscure details and pieces together who has been orchestrating this while hiding in plain sight.

Often when you read an authors books in order you get used to the way they write and learn to figure things out before you should but this was definitely not the case!! Sure didn’t see most of the twists coming and quite sad to see a character I quite liked come to an end. Definitely worth the read! I really enjoyed it x hard to put down!
