Jack McEvoy est au moins aussi attachant qu'Harry Bosch
Il lui reste deux semaines à tirer qu’il s’emploie à disculper un jeune gangster du meurtre d’une danseuse blanche, retrouvée dans le coffre de sa voiture, torturée et étouffée avec un sac en plastique serré au cou avec une corde à linge.
Car nous savons dès les premières pages que l’assassin n’est pas ce jeune noir. Il œuvre au cœur d’un gigantesque entrepôt de données et a tout le loisir d’infiltrer les serveurs de ses clients et du journal, en hacker de génie. C’est une lutte à mort entre cet ingénieur pervers et le journaliste, aidé par l’agent fédéral Rachel Walling, rencontrée sur l’enquête du Poète et dans plusieurs aventures d’Harry Bosch (Los Angeles River, Echo Park, Volte-face, The Drops).
Jack McEvoy se bat sur plusieurs fronts : l’avenir de sa carrière professionnelle, la quête de la vérité, la relation renouée avec Rachel, le système judiciaire … et sa propre vie.
En effet, la jeune journaliste qui doit remplacer McEvoy au journal a découvert un cas très semblable à celui de la première victime, où cette fois c’est le mari qui a été incarcéré malgré ses protestations d’innocence. Dans les deux cas, le vrai meurtrier aurait échappé à l’attention de tous puisqu’un suspect apparaissant tout de suite dans l’affaire – le jeune dealer comme le mari – les autorités avaient leur bonhomme dans la main sans chercher plus loin. Mais sa découverte va lui coûter cher …
Encore une fois, les femmes jouent un rôle éminent dans l’œuvre de Michael Connelly : belles, courageuses, intelligentes … et la vie d'une rédaction de grand quotidien. Autant de raisons qui me font adorer ces livres que je dévore comme les accrocs à la cigarette : j’en ouvre un nouveau sitôt la dernière page du précédent tournée …
